Only few men have embodied the romantic myth of the brilliant and unconventional artist such as Modigliani. "Modi," the cursed artist by the dissolute life, the beautiful dandy from the many loves, the misunderstood genius who took refuge in wine and absynthe, and whose history is short but intense, dramatic and memorable.
All those who posed for him said that being painted by Modigliani was like having the soul stripped.
In the beautiful Palazzo Blu in Pisa, a selection of works coming from the Centre Pompidou in Paris together with amazing masterpieces coming from Italian and foreign private and public collections, which will create again the cultural atmosphere of the amazing painting experience of those times and the story of Modigliani from his training in Livorno until his moving to Paris, in 1906, in the constant and restless search for the new.
It's in the city of Paris, with its fauves avant-garde culture, and among friends such as Marc Chagall, Max Jacob, Georges Braque, Jean Cocteau, that the dissolute artist developed his artistic poetry, strongly influenced by Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec e Cézanne.
Together with the works by Modigliani, there will be great works by Chaim Soutine, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger and other popular artists such as Maurice Utrillo, Suzanne Valadon, André Derain o Raoul Dufy, Juan Gris e Gino Severini.
In addition, a selection of sculptures by Modigliani and other famous sculptors like Constantin Brancusi and also a series of pictures taken by Brancusi himself.
The exhibition is curated by Jean Michel Bouhours, student of Modigliani and curator of the Department of modern collections of the Centre Pompidou di Parigi.
